Kailash is the only mountain on Earth that is doubly protected from human ascent — by law and by faith. Not because it is technically impossible — climbers estimate its technical difficulty is not exceptional — but because for Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, and Bon, to set foot on its summit is sacrilege: this is the abode of the divine, not something for humans to conquer. Tens of thousands of pilgrims each year measure out the 52-kilometer Kora around its base — some walk it in three days, some prostrate their entire bodies step by step over four weeks.
