In 1998, New Zealand did something extraordinarily rare: the government formally returned legal sovereignty of Aoraki / Mount Cook to the Ngāi Tahu Māori people, acknowledging that this mountain never truly belonged to the state — it belonged to those who called it ancestor. In Māori tradition, Aoraki is the shared ancestor of all Māori: he and his brothers fell asleep on a canoe, the vessel capsized, and they became the mountains. The entire South Island is an overturned ancestral canoe. When a language disappears, stories like this can no longer be told — not just the words, but an entire people's way of seeing themselves and their land sinks beneath the surface. The Culture family exists to surface those stories before the language goes under.
